Common Questions about "Text Neck"

If you’re always on your phone responding to emails, checking social media, and texting, you may notice your neck feels achy by the end of the day. Sometimes you even wake up and you’re in pain. The postural habits you pick up with your continuous phone use may lead to what’s known as text neck. Our team at Unity Chiropractic & Wellness Center in Beaverton knows how debilitating the pain can be and want to alleviate your pain. Here are the answers to some commonly asked questions regarding “Text Neck”.

What Is Text Neck?

Text neck is a relatively new condition in which the neck is painfully affected by the habit of texting. It can also harm the back as you lean over on your phone. Most of the time, the muscles are just sore with text neck, but the condition can become worse with time.

What Causes It?

Each time you grab your phone and begin scrolling or texting, you’re bending your head down to get a better angle of the phone. This is especially obvious when you stand, but it can occur while sitting, too. This is the primary cause of text neck.

Which Stretches Can Alleviate Text Neck Pain?

If you have text neck, you should set up an appointment with a chiropractor at Unity Chiropractic & Wellness Center. They’ll teach you some stretches you can do for less text neck pain. These stretches include:

  • Stretching the chest. Start in a standing position with your arms prone. Then, begin to move the forearms, twisting them so your thumbs face towards your back. Repeat as necessary.
  • Stress ball squeezing. Go from hand to hand in 30-second increments.
  • Hand stretching. Ball your hands up to make a fist. Release and expand your fingers as far as they can comfortably go. Return to the first position. Repeat 10 times per hand.
