Herniated disc FAQ

Herniated Disc FAQs

A herniated disc is a common spinal injury that can be extremely painful. The pain and discomfort can easily disrupt your lifestyle. If you suspect you have a herniated disc, we recommend you visit our Beaverton, OR, chiropractor for an evaluation. These FAQs from Unity Chiropractic and Wellness Center explain more about this condition.

What is a herniated disc?

A herniated disc occurs when the outer portion of your vertebral disc gets torn, making room for the inner portion (nucleus) to push through. If the nucleus presses against spinal nerves, it can cause pain or numbness in your back, arms, or legs.

What causes a herniated disc?

Trauma to your spine or forceful movements may cause a herniated disc. Typically, this trauma occurs as the result of a slip and fall, auto accident, or sports injury. Herniated discs can also be caused by cumulative damage to spinal discs over time due to heavy lifting, bad posture, or poor ergonomics.

Who’s at risk for this condition?

Spinal discs become less pliable as you age, making seniors more susceptible to herniated disc injuries. If you’re overweight, sit for long periods of time, or have a job that puts undue pressure on your spine, you’re also prone to this condition.

What are the symptoms of a herniated disc?

Some people feel no symptoms. If you do, however, common symptoms include:

  • Pain in your neck, back, arms, or legs
  • Arm or leg numbness and weakness
  • Muscle spasms

How is a herniated disc treated?

Herniated discs can be diagnosed through a physical exam and x-ray. Once this condition is diagnosed, our chiropractor can develop a treatment plan for you that focuses on relieving pain, restoring mobility, and helping you heal.

We utilize various chiropractic techniques and natural therapies for herniated disc treatment. These include spinal decompression, chiropractic adjustments, cold laser therapy, and corrective exercises, depending on the severity of your injury. We’ll customize your treatment plan to suit your healthcare needs.
