Chronic Stress-Related Injuries

In life- balance is key. This is true in all aspects of our lives, including stress and stress management. Just as an electrical system needs some resistance against the electrical flow in order to properly power tools and devices- we need stress as a resistor in order to properly regulate our engagement with the world and involvement in activity. The sensations of stress are there to tell you when you may need to back off, allowing your mind and body to avoid undue injury and fatigue.

.

But persistent and improperly managed stress can lead to any number of injuries and illnesses. This is because an excess of stress wears down our ability to heal and our natural resilience.

Here at Unity Chiropractic and Wellness Center in Beaverton, we specialize in helping patients manage their lifestyles to properly deal with stress. We also offer a wide range of therapeutic treatments to aid in relaxation and recovery.

Here, we will discuss some of the common injuries and illnesses that can develop as a result of improperly managed stress.

Repetitive Use Stress Injuries

One very common category of stress-related injury is that which encompasses injuries that result from the daily repetition of the same or similar movements. Among the most common of these is tendinitis. Tendinitis is a condition where the tendons of the wrist, knee, elbow, or other bony joint become inflamed, causing pain and restricting mobility.

Most of these conditions can be remedied with rest and time. Rehabilitation activities might be necessary, and in some cases- surgery may be called for.

Other examples of repetitive use injury include: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Bursitis, Epicondylitis, Ganglion Cyst, and Tenosynovitis.

Common causes of these conditions include: excessive repetition of the same or similar motions, overexertion, bad posture, and muscle fatigue.

Common Repetitive Injury Sites include: hands, wrists, thumbs, fingers, elbows, shoulders, hips, knees, and the lower back.

Other Stress-Related Conditions

Unregulated stress can take a serious toll on our health in many ways which can manifest in any number of dangerous disease processes. Common stress-related illnesses include; Obesity, Depression, Heart Disease, Diabetes, and Alzheimer’s Disease.

Of course, this list is far from exhaustive. The good news is that many, if not all of these conditions can be improved through changes in lifestyle, posture, nutrition, and more.
